Global Day of Action Against War and Occupation: The World Still Says No to War!

Event: Rally and March Against War and Occupation: The World Still Says No to War!
Date: Saturday, March 20th, 2004
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Place: Pioneer Courthouse Square

Over one hundred local peace and social action organizations will hold a rally and march as part of a global mobilization against war and occupation at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20th, in Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. The rally and march will be fully permitted by the City of Portland, participation is free and open to everyone. For more information, please call Peace & Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group at (503) 236-3065.

"With March 20th fast approaching, and with already got over nintey co-sponsors and endorsers for this rally and march, we are hearing from more organizations with each passing day," said Mikel Clayhold, a volunteer with Portland Peaceful Response Coalition, one of the dozens of groups actively planning the March 20th event. "The declining fortunes of the Bush administration, dogged by renewed interest in Bushs National Guard service and increasing criticism of the fraudulent arguments for his war on Iraq, have definitely spurred support for the Portland event."

The main theme for the March 20 event is "The World Still Says No To War".
Subthemes for the day are:
"Fund Jobs, Education and Health Care, Not War"
"End US Support of Israel's Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza"
"Defend Civil Liberties - Repeal the USA Patriot Act."

The themes highlight links between local and global issues affected by Bushs permanent war economy and the administrations war- and military-based foreign policy, according to Clayhold. The rally and march come almost exactly one year after the U.S. began the full-scale invasion of Iraq.

Organizations interested in becoming involved may contact Peace and Justice Works (PJW) at (503) 236-3065.
